Altea's old centre climbs a hill above the bay, its lanes converging on the parish church of Nostra Senyora del Consol and the broad view from the Plaça de l'Església.

The town's identity also runs downhill: through galleries and performance spaces, across the lower centre and promenade and on to the wetland where the River Algar reaches the sea.
