The Segura, Puente Viejo and Murcia Cathedral's tower, with irrigated huerta beyond the city

Murcia

The city at the centre of the Segura's irrigated huerta, where a layered cathedral, Salzillo's sculpture and civic rooms connect the regional capital to its own landscape.

The city inside the huerta

A regional capital shaped by river, irrigation and baroque stone

Murcia is the capital city of the Región de Murcia, not another name for the whole autonomous community. Its compact historic centre stands beside the Segura within a much larger municipality of urban neighbourhoods, pedanías and cultivated huerta.

The cathedral tower fixes the city skyline, while acequias, the river and the Bando de la Huerta keep its relationship with the irrigated valley visible. Salzillo's processional sculpture and the Real Casino add two very different interiors to that outdoor geography.
